Michael Myers
The mask that defines the entire slasher genre cost about two dollars. Halloween was made for roughly $300,000 and the production could not afford a custom appliance, so production designer Tommy Lee Wallace bought a Captain Kirk mask from a costume shop, widened the eye holes, teased out the hair and spray-painted it white.

Who is Michael Myers?
The mask that defines the entire slasher genre cost about two dollars. Halloween was made for roughly $300,000 and the production could not afford a custom appliance, so production designer Tommy Lee Wallace bought a Captain Kirk mask from a costume shop, widened the eye holes, teased out the hair and spray-painted it white. The result removes all expression and all colour from a human face, and John Carpenter's decision to shoot the character mostly in wide, static frames — standing still, at a distance, in daylight — is what makes it frightening. He is credited in the film as The Shape rather than by name, which tells you how the character was conceived: not a person with motives but a presence. The film was enormously profitable relative to its cost and effectively created the commercial template for the slasher cycle that followed.

The film that established the commercial template for the slasher cycle, and a mask improvised from a two-dollar prop that became one of the most recognisable images in horror.
What Michael Myers looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: The blank white mask and dark boiler suit
The most minimal design in horror — a featureless pale oval. That extreme reduction is why it reproduces so well at any size and in any single colour, and why it remains legible even heavily abstracted or partially obscured.
The most minimal graphic in the whole horror category — a featureless pale oval. Works at any size, in any single colour, and survives heavy abstraction. Black garments almost exclusively. Adult sizing only on this site.
