Carrie White

Carrie exists because Stephen King's wife went through the bin. He had thrown the first pages away, convinced he could not write convincingly about teenage girls, and Tabitha King retrieved them and told him to continue — which makes this the origin point of the best-selling horror career of the century.

Who is Carrie White?

Carrie exists because Stephen King's wife went through the bin. He had thrown the first pages away, convinced he could not write convincingly about teenage girls, and Tabitha King retrieved them and told him to continue — which makes this the origin point of the best-selling horror career of the century. It was his first published novel, and De Palma's 1976 film was the first adaptation of his work. What separates it from the revenge fantasy it is often taken for is that the book is not on anyone's side by the end: the bullying is unbearable, the response is a massacre of people who mostly did not deserve it, and the mother is a genuinely frightening portrait of religious abuse. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were both Oscar-nominated, which was almost unheard of for horror in 1977.

What Carrie White looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: A white prom dress drenched in red; a tipping bucket

White and blood red is the entire visual and it is one of the strongest two-colour propositions in horror. The image works as pure silhouette and needs no face, which is unusual for a character-driven story.
