Who is Beetlejuice?

Beetlejuice inverts its genre completely: the ghosts are the protagonists, the living family are the infestation, and the afterlife is a bureaucracy with a waiting room and case workers. The title character appears for roughly seventeen minutes of a ninety-two-minute film. Tim Burton has said the part was deliberately written thin so that whoever played it would have to fill the space, and Michael Keaton improvised a substantial amount of the performance, including much of the physicality and the voice. The effects are handmade — stop motion, forced perspective, latex — at a point when the industry was moving toward polish, and that roughness is now the property's whole aesthetic. The black-and-white vertical stripes have become one of the most reproduced patterns in licensed apparel, largely detached from the film.

Why Beetlejuice endures

A horror comedy that reversed its genre's perspective entirely, and the source of one of the most reproduced patterns in licensed apparel — a stripe that now sells with no reference to the film at all.

What Beetlejuice looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The black-and-white striped suit, green hair and grey-white face

The vertical black-and-white stripe is the asset and it has almost separated from the character — it works as an all-over print, a sleeve panel or a background with no figure at all, which very few designs in this category manage.
