Frankenstein's Monster

Mary Shelley was eighteen when she began Frankenstein, during the same wet Swiss summer that produced the first modern vampire story, and the novel she wrote is not really a horror story — it is an argument about responsibility. The creature is articulate, well read, and driven to violence only after being abandoned by his maker and rejected by everyone he approaches; the monster of the title is arguably the scientist.

Who is Frankenstein's Monster?

Mary Shelley was eighteen when she began Frankenstein, during the same wet Swiss summer that produced the first modern vampire story, and the novel she wrote is not really a horror story — it is an argument about responsibility. The creature is articulate, well read, and driven to violence only after being abandoned by his maker and rejected by everyone he approaches; the monster of the title is arguably the scientist. Almost nothing of that survives into popular memory, because Universal's 1931 film made the creature mute and shambling and gave him a criminal's brain. What that film did supply is the design: Jack Pierce's flat-topped skull, heavy brow and neck electrodes are entirely his invention, appear nowhere in Shelley, and are the version the world now pictures. The common slip of calling the creature Frankenstein is old enough that Shelley's own circle made it.

Why Frankenstein's Monster endures

Frequently identified as the first science-fiction novel, and — through Jack Pierce's 1931 make-up — the source of one of the most recognised character designs ever created for film.

Signature motif: The flat-topped head, heavy brow, neck bolts and stitched scars

The flat-topped silhouette is unmistakable in pure outline, and the green skin tone is a film-poster invention rather than anything in the novel or the black-and-white film. Green and grey on black is the standard treatment.

The flat-topped silhouette is unmistakable in pure outline. Green skin is a poster-art invention, not from the novel or the black-and-white film. Green and grey on black. Vintage poster treatments are strong. Teen and adult.
