The Mummy

The 1932 film exists because of a newspaper story. Howard Carter opened Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, several people connected to the excavation subsequently died, and the international press built a curse narrative that Universal turned into a picture within a decade — making this the only one of the studio's monsters derived from a live news cycle rather than a novel.

Who is The Mummy?

The 1932 film exists because of a newspaper story. Howard Carter opened Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, several people connected to the excavation subsequently died, and the international press built a curse narrative that Universal turned into a picture within a decade — making this the only one of the studio's monsters derived from a live news cycle rather than a novel. The film itself is much slower and stranger than its reputation: the bandaged figure everyone pictures appears in one sequence, and the rest is a quiet, hypnotic story about a man who has waited several thousand years for a woman he believes is a reincarnation. Jack Pierce's make-up on Boris Karloff took around eight hours to apply, and the shot of the creature's eyes opening is still one of the most effective moments in the studio's whole cycle.

Why The Mummy endures

The only Universal monster built from a contemporary news story rather than a novel, and the origin of the mummy's-curse convention that has run through popular fiction ever since.

What The Mummy looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Trailing linen bandages, a sarcophagus, hieroglyphic borders

Bandage wrapping is a texture rather than a logo, which is unusual in horror and makes all-over and layered treatments viable. The gold-on-black Egyptian register also separates this design completely from the greys of the other Universal monsters.

Bandage wrapping is a texture, not a logo — all-over and layered treatments work here where they fail on badge-based designs. Gold-on-black Egyptian register separates it entirely from the other Universal monsters.
