Who is Blue?
Blue is the franchise's attempt to make a raptor a character rather than a threat, and it half works — the relationship with her handler is the only thing in the newer films that has stuck with audiences. The palaeontology is worth stating plainly, because the films get it wrong and know they do: real velociraptors were roughly turkey-sized and feathered, and the animals on screen are scaled up and modelled much more closely on Deinonychus. Crichton was aware of this and chose the more dramatic name. Subsequent fossil evidence made the feather question considerably more certain, and the franchise has explained its own animals as deliberately inaccurate hybrids rather than retconning the design — which is a neater solution than it had to find.
