About Jurassic Park

Michael Crichton's 1990 novel is a considerably colder book than the film it became — a cautionary argument about complexity and hubris, with a body count and a genuinely bleak view of the people funding the park. Spielberg kept the spectacle and softened the thesis. What the 1993 film actually changed was the industry: it was the first picture to make computer-generated creatures share a frame with actors convincingly, and the effects team had built the shots as a test without being asked, which persuaded Spielberg to abandon the stop-motion he had planned. The dinosaurs themselves reflect the science of the moment rather than the science now — the raptors are oversized and featherless, closer to Deinonychus than to the turkey-sized real animal.

The effects team built the computer-generated dinosaur test unprompted; it convinced Spielberg to abandon the stop-motion he had planned.
