Who is E.T.?
E.T. came out of a much darker abandoned project — Spielberg had been developing a film about a family terrorised by aliens, and pulled the gentlest thread out of it instead. The creature was built by Carlo Rambaldi and operated by several performers, and Spielberg shot much of the film in sequence and at child eye level so the young cast's reactions would be genuine; Henry Thomas's audition, improvising grief about a dead dog, is well known and is essentially the performance the film is built on. Underneath the science fiction it is a divorce film. The father is absent, mentioned in passing and never seen, and the alien arrives into a hole that was already there — which is why the ending lands as hard as it does.
