Agent Smith is a piece of software that develops contempt, which is a considerably stranger antagonist than the marketing suggested. Hugo Weaving plays him with a flat, over-precise American diction that sounds like a program approximating speech, and the deliberate pause before the word human became one of the most imitated line readings of the period.
