Who is Buddy the Elf?
Buddy is a human raised by elves at the North Pole who travels to New York to find his father, and Will Ferrell plays him with complete, unguarded sincerity, which is what makes the comedy work. David Berenbaum wrote the script and Jon Favreau directed it for New Line Cinema in 2003. Favreau chose older techniques on purpose. Buddy's size among the elves was created mostly with forced perspective and scaled sets rather than digital effects, and the North Pole's animals are stop-motion puppets from the Chiodo Brothers in a deliberate tribute to the Rankin/Bass television specials. The film became a sizeable hit and a Broadway musical followed in 2010. Its costume — a green tunic with a white fur trim, yellow tights and a pointed hat — is the most borrowed look in American Christmas apparel, and so are its lines about syrup, smiling and singing loud. Many Buddy shirts are, in effect, a costume printed onto a tee.

Why Buddy the Elf endures
The most-worn character in American Christmas apparel, from a film that deliberately borrowed the look of the 1960s television specials.
What Buddy the Elf looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Green elf tunic with white trim, yellow tights, pointed hat
The costume is simple enough to print as a shirt that reads as the outfit, which is why the costume tee is this character's biggest category. Quote designs sell alongside it, mostly on red and green.
Costume-print tees are the main category and come in family sizes from toddler to adult. Quote designs work on red, green and heather. Order early for December events.
