Who is Ellen Ripley?
Ripley exists as a woman by accident, and the accident is instructive. Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett wrote Alien with a note specifying that all crew roles were unisex and could be cast either way, so the character was not written as a female lead — she simply ended up one at casting. The result is a protagonist with none of the signals a 1979 audience would have expected: no romance, no rescuing, no softening, and a competence the film never comments on. She is also right throughout the first film and ignored throughout, which is the plot. James Cameron's 1986 sequel rebuilt her as an action lead and earned Sigourney Weaver an Academy Award nomination — at the time an almost unheard-of recognition for a performance in a science-fiction or horror film.
