Who is The Shark?
The most frightening thing about the shark in Jaws is how rarely you see it, and that was not a decision — it was a malfunction. Robert Mattey's mechanical shark, nicknamed Bruce after Spielberg's lawyer, was built without being tested in salt water and failed almost immediately and repeatedly. With the schedule collapsing, Spielberg shot around it: a floating yellow barrel, a submerged point-of-view camera, and John Williams's two-note figure standing in for an animal the audience never properly sees until very late. The restraint is why the film works, and it came from equipment failure. Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel, spent much of his later life campaigning for shark conservation, having concluded that the book had done real damage to public attitudes toward the animal.
