Godzilla

The 1954 Gojira is a considerably more serious film than its reputation in the West suggests. Released nine years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and months after the crew of a Japanese fishing boat were contaminated by American hydrogen bomb testing at Bikini Atoll, it is fundamentally about mass civilian death — long sequences of hospitals overflowing and children being tested for radiation, shot closer to documentary than to monster picture.

Who is Godzilla?

The 1954 Gojira is a considerably more serious film than its reputation in the West suggests. Released nine years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and months after the crew of a Japanese fishing boat were contaminated by American hydrogen bomb testing at Bikini Atoll, it is fundamentally about mass civilian death — long sequences of hospitals overflowing and children being tested for radiation, shot closer to documentary than to monster picture. The American release two years later cut much of that and inserted a new character to narrate, which is the version most Western audiences saw for decades. What followed lightened the tone almost beyond recognition, turning the creature into a protector and eventually a children's hero, before later films returned to the original register. It is the longest continuously running film franchise in the world.

Why Godzilla endures

The longest continuously running film franchise in the world, and one of the very few pieces of mass-market popular culture created as a direct response to nuclear weapons by the only country to have been attacked with them.

What Godzilla looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The charcoal reptilian silhouette with jagged dorsal plates and atomic breath

The dorsal plates are what make the silhouette unmistakable — a jagged ridge along the spine that identifies the creature from the outline alone. The blue atomic breath is the only colour most designs need, and it glows well against charcoal or black.
