About Godzilla

Godzilla began as a direct response to nuclear weapons. The original 1954 film was made nine years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki and months after a Japanese fishing boat was contaminated by American hydrogen bomb testing at Bikini Atoll, and it is a genuinely sombre film about mass civilian death — closer to a disaster documentary than a monster picture. Almost everything that followed lightened the tone, turning the creature into a protector and eventually a children's character, before later films returned to the original register. It is the longest continuously running film franchise in the world.

The 1954 film was released nine years after the atomic bombings and directly references the Lucky Dragon 5 fishing boat incident of that year.
