Almost everything that followed lightened the tone, turning the creature into a protector and eventually a children's character, before later films returned to the original register. It is the longest continuously running film franchise in the world.
The 1954 film was released nine years after the atomic bombings and directly references the Lucky Dragon 5 fishing boat incident of that year.
