Who is Hannibal Lecter?
Hannibal Lecter works because he is almost never doing anything. Anthony Hopkins is on screen for around sixteen minutes of The Silence of the Lambs and won an Academy Award for it, which remains one of the shortest Oscar-winning lead performances ever given. The threat is conversational: he is behind glass for most of the film, and what makes the scenes unbearable is that he is more interested in the person opposite him than in escaping. Thomas Harris has said the character owes something to a doctor he met while reporting in a Mexican prison in the 1960s — a surgeon, imprisoned for murder, who was elegant, small and completely composed. Silence is also one of only three films to win all five major Academy Awards, and the only horror film ever to win Best Picture.

What Hannibal Lecter looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: The leather-and-steel restraint mask; a prison jumpsuit
The mask is one of the most reproducible marks in horror — a symmetrical cage over the lower face, legible in a single colour at any size. It works exactly as a slasher mask does while belonging to a character who never wears one by choice.
