Jafar is the Sultan's grand vizier in Aladdin: tall, thin, dressed in black and red, carrying a staff topped with a cobra, and always accompanied by the loud parrot Iago. Andreas Deja animated him for the 1992 film, and the design is widely said to draw on Conrad Veidt's villain in the 1940 film The Thief of Bagdad.

Who is Jafar?

Jafar is the Sultan's grand vizier in Aladdin: tall, thin, dressed in black and red, carrying a staff topped with a cobra, and always accompanied by the loud parrot Iago. Andreas Deja animated him for the 1992 film, and the design is widely said to draw on Conrad Veidt's villain in the 1940 film The Thief of Bagdad. Jonathan Freeman gave him a low, precise voice and played the role again in the Broadway musical from 2014. Gilbert Gottfried voiced Iago. Jafar returned in The Return of Jafar in 1994, Disney's first direct-to-video sequel, and Marwan Kenzari played him in the 2019 live-action remake. His sharp, vertical silhouette makes him one of the easiest Disney villains to recognise.
