Who is Mulan?
The source here is older than almost anything else the studio has adapted. The Ballad of Mulan is a Chinese folk poem generally dated to around the sixth century, a few hundred words long, in which a daughter takes her father's place in the army and comes home twelve years later. Disney's version keeps the frame and invents everything inside it, including the dragon. What makes the 1998 film hold up visually is the art direction: rather than the dense detail of the studio's European fairy tales, it borrows from Chinese landscape painting — large areas of empty space, simplified line, colour used sparingly and then all at once. The Huns advancing over a snowfield is a crowd simulation, but it reads as ink on paper. Ming-Na Wen speaks the part and Lea Salonga sings it.

Why Mulan endures
The studio's adaptation of its oldest source text, and the one whose visual language borrows from painting rather than illustration.
What Mulan looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Red and gold, the magnolia blossom, the sword and the bronze mirror
The blossom and the mirror both carry the story without a face, and red-and-gold on black is a stronger adult combination than anything else in the princess range. This is a property whose iconography suits an adult wearer unusually well.
Red and gold on black is the standout adult combination in this range. Blossom and mirror motifs work without a likeness. Youth sizing takes the figure prints.
