Who is Moana?
Moana was made under an arrangement the studio had not used before. Ron Clements and John Musker, who had been directing there since the 1980s, assembled an Oceanic Story Trust — anthropologists, navigators, linguists, tattoo artists and cultural practitioners from Samoa, Tahiti, Fiji and New Zealand — and ran the film past them repeatedly through production, changing things when told to. The result is a film built around wayfinding, the Polynesian navigation tradition of reading swell, star and bird to cross open ocean without instruments, which is both the plot and the reason the character carries an oar rather than a wand. Auliʻi Cravalho was fourteen and had entered a charity singing contest when she was cast. The film has no romantic subplot at all, which for a studio princess film released in 2016 was the most conspicuous thing about it.
