Who is Tails?
Tails exists because Sonic 2 needed a second player, and the design solved that with a genuine mechanical idea rather than a palette swap: two tails that spin like a rotor, letting him fly, which makes the second player useful rather than decorative. Yasushi Yamaguchi designed him and wanted to call him Miles; Sega of America wanted Tails; the compromise was to use both, which is why his full name is Miles Prower — a pun on miles per hour that most players never notice. Within the series he is the engineer, and the later games lean on that: he builds the planes, fixes the machines, and is the only character in the cast with a stated technical competence.
