Who is Knuckles?
Knuckles is an echidna, which is a genuinely unusual choice — a spiny egg-laying Australian mammal that almost nobody could identify, picked precisely because the spines echo Sonic's quills while the animal is otherwise unrelated. He is introduced as an antagonist and the story is careful about why: he is not evil but credulous, tricked by Robotnik into believing Sonic is the thief, and the arc is him working out he has been used. That makes him the rare rival whose opposition comes from being lied to rather than from malice. His function is guardian of the Master Emerald, which gives him a reason to stay on one island while everyone else travels, and mechanically he trades speed for the ability to glide and climb walls — a genuinely different way of moving through the same levels.
