The Red Ranger is a position rather than a person, and that is the whole design of the franchise. Haim Saban licensed the Japanese series Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, kept its costumed action footage — which is expensive, well choreographed, and shot with the performers entirely hidden inside suits — and filmed new American scenes with unmasked teenagers in a Californian high school. The two halves cut together because the helmet never comes off mid-fight. Jason Lee Scott, played by Austin St. John, held the red suit first in 1993; more than thirty seasons later dozens of actors have worn it, and the suit is what the audience recognises. For apparel this is unusually convenient, because the licence is a helmet and a colour rather than a face that has to stay on model.
