Who is Optimus Prime?
Optimus Prime is a toy that was given a soul by a work-for-hire comics writer. Hasbro imported two Japanese toy lines, needed American fiction to sell them, and hired Marvel — where Dennis O'Neil supplied the name and Bob Budiansky wrote personality profiles for most of the roster, in some cases a paragraph per figure on the back of a box. What Budiansky gave this one was an unusual quality for a children's toy line: a leader who is genuinely burdened by command, who takes no satisfaction in the war, and whose defining trait is that he will sacrifice the mission to save one life. The 1986 animated film then killed him off to clear retail shelf space for new products, and the resulting distress among children was significant enough that Hasbro reversed the decision and brought him back. That episode is now a standard cautionary tale in franchise management.

Why Optimus Prime endures
The central character of the toy-first franchise model that dominated 1980s children's television, and the subject of the era's clearest lesson about killing a character purely for retail reasons.
What Optimus Prime looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: The red-and-blue truck cab; the angular Autobot face insignia
The Autobot insignia is one of the best faction marks in merchandising — an angular stylised face that works in one colour at any size and identifies the property with no character present. Red, blue and chrome is instantly recognisable.
The Autobot insignia is among the strongest faction marks in all merchandising — angular, symmetrical, one colour, no character required. Red, blue and chrome. Excellent across every size band; the insignia works equally well tiny or as a large centre print.
