Masters of the Universe

He-Man

He-Man exists because Mattel turned down the Star Wars toy licence and needed something to compete with it. The figures were designed first, the fiction was written afterwards in mini-comics packaged inside the boxes, and the 1983 Filmation cartoon followed to advertise the line — a sequence that is now the standard example of the toy-first model.

Who is He-Man?

He-Man exists because Mattel turned down the Star Wars toy licence and needed something to compete with it. The figures were designed first, the fiction was written afterwards in mini-comics packaged inside the boxes, and the 1983 Filmation cartoon followed to advertise the line — a sequence that is now the standard example of the toy-first model. The setting deliberately mixes sword-and-sorcery with science fiction on the reasoning that children will play with barbarians and spaceships together regardless of genre logic. The secret identity is the odd part: Prince Adam is a deliberately indolent royal who transforms into the same body with different clothing, which fools everyone, and the show never treats this as a joke. The moral segments closing each episode, added to satisfy critics of programme-length toy commercials, are now the most-parodied element of 1980s children's television.

He-Man: the details

First appearance
The Masters of the Universe toy line, 1982; the animated series followed in 1983
Created by
Developed at Mattel, with designer Mark Taylor and Roger Sweet both credited in competing accounts
Mattel passed on Star Wars
The company declined that licence and built this line to compete with it
Fiction came after the toys
Mini-comics inside the packaging did the worldbuilding before any screen version existed
Deliberate genre mixing
Sword-and-sorcery and science fiction combined on the reasoning that children play across genres
The secret identity
Prince Adam transforms into the same body with different clothing, and the series plays it entirely straight
The moral codas
Added partly to answer criticism of programme-length toy advertising, and now the most-parodied element of the era

Why He-Man endures

The clearest example of the 1980s toy-first franchise model, in which the products preceded the fiction entirely, and a central case in the debate over programme-length advertising to children.

What He-Man looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The cross-strap harness, the Power Sword, and the blonde bob

The Power Sword raised overhead is the pose everyone knows, and it works as a strong single silhouette. Bright yellow, red and brown gives this line a distinctly 1980s palette that is itself the selling point for the adult nostalgia market.

The raised Power Sword is the pose and works as a strong single silhouette. The bright 1980s palette is itself the appeal for the adult nostalgia market. Retro and distressed treatments dominate; skews adult more than kids.
