Who is Gambit?
Gambit is Remy LeBeau, a Cajun mutant thief from New Orleans who charges objects — usually playing cards — with kinetic energy so that they explode when thrown. Chris Claremont and Jim Lee introduced him in 1990, and he joined the X-Men with a long coat, a bo staff, red-on-black eyes and a charming, untrustworthy manner. His relationship with Rogue, whose touch drains others and who therefore cannot touch him, became one of the X-Men's best-known romances. X-Men: The Animated Series, which began in 1992, made Gambit one of the most popular mutants of the decade, and its 2024 revival, X-Men '97, brought him back to a new audience. Taylor Kitsch played him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. A solo Gambit film with Channing Tatum was in development for years and never made, a history the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine turned into a joke by finally casting Tatum in the role. His playing cards, especially the king of hearts, and the pink energy glow are the designs fans look for, often alongside Rogue.
