Jean Grey

Jean Grey is the centre of the most influential storyline in superhero comics. The Dark Phoenix Saga, published across 1980 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, took a founding member of the X-Men, escalated her power beyond containment, had her destroy an inhabited star system, and then killed her — and the decision was reportedly forced by an editor who argued that genocide could not be walked back with an apology.

Who is Jean Grey?

Jean Grey is the centre of the most influential storyline in superhero comics. The Dark Phoenix Saga, published across 1980 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, took a founding member of the X-Men, escalated her power beyond containment, had her destroy an inhabited star system, and then killed her — and the decision was reportedly forced by an editor who argued that genocide could not be walked back with an apology. That ending changed what mainstream comics believed they were allowed to do to a protagonist, and its influence is still visible in every story that lets a hero fail permanently. She has since returned, repeatedly, which is its own commentary. The character is otherwise notable for having been Marvel's first significant female superhero to be written as the most powerful person on her team rather than the support.

Why Jean Grey endures

The lead of the storyline most often credited with proving that mainstream superhero comics could let a protagonist fail irreversibly. Its influence on how the genre handles consequence is difficult to overstate.

What Jean Grey looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The flaming phoenix raptor, red hair, green and gold costume

The phoenix firebird is among the best marks in comics — a broad, symmetrical, flame-shaped raptor that works as a single-colour print at any scale and needs no name attached. Red and orange on black is the natural pairing.

The phoenix raptor is one of the strongest single-colour marks available anywhere in this category — broad, symmetrical and legible tiny or huge. Red and orange on black, or gold foil. Teen and adult sizing; women's cut is common.
