Wolverine

Wolverine was created to give the Hulk a Canadian opponent and was very nearly a throwaway. He became Marvel's most valuable non-Spider-Man character because Chris Claremont and John Byrne, on the relaunched X-Men, worked out what he was for: a man whose body cannot be permanently damaged and whose mind has been repeatedly rewritten, which makes him simultaneously indestructible and the most vulnerable person in the room.

Who is Wolverine?

Wolverine was created to give the Hulk a Canadian opponent and was very nearly a throwaway. He became Marvel's most valuable non-Spider-Man character because Chris Claremont and John Byrne, on the relaunched X-Men, worked out what he was for: a man whose body cannot be permanently damaged and whose mind has been repeatedly rewritten, which makes him simultaneously indestructible and the most vulnerable person in the room. The long deferral of his origin — decades in which Marvel deliberately declined to explain him — was an unusually disciplined piece of long-form plotting, and much of the character's mystique dissolved when it was finally answered in 2001. He also carries one of the genre's few genuinely earned endings: the 2017 film Logan, which put an aging, dying version of the character in a Western and received an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay.

Why Wolverine endures

The breakout character of the X-Men relaunch that saved the franchise, and the template for the morally compromised antihero who dominated comics through the 1980s and 1990s. Hugh Jackman's seventeen-year run is the longest any actor has played a superhero in film.

What Wolverine looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The yellow-and-blue suit, the pointed cowl, and three extended claws

The claws are the graphic — three parallel slashes are enough to signal the character with no name attached, and the 'torn through fabric' claw-mark print is one of the most reused devices in comics apparel.

Claw marks are the dominant device — three slashes through the garment graphic, often with a torn-fabric effect. The yellow-and-blue costume print is the nostalgic option; black and grey suits the Logan-era treatments. Adult and teen sizing.

This profile was compiled from published reference material about Wolverine — first appearance, creator credits and production history — and is a secondary source rather than a substitute for the original publication. Where a detail could not be corroborated it has been left out. We do not physically test garments; see how we work for what that means and what it does not.
