Who is The Hulk?

The Hulk is Marvel's monster, and the fact that he is on the hero side of the ledger has never quite settled the question. Stan Lee has said the character came from wanting to combine Frankenstein's creature with Jekyll and Hyde — a being the reader sympathises with while everyone in the story is trying to destroy him. He was grey in his first issue and turned green largely because the printing of grey was inconsistent, one of the more consequential accidents in comics colour. The premise has proved endlessly adaptable because it is a metaphor with no fixed referent: the Hulk has been read as nuclear anxiety, as repressed trauma, as addiction, as rage, as dissociative identity, and the stories rarely close off any of them. His original title was cancelled after six issues; he survived only because Marvel kept using him elsewhere, and the 1977 television series then made him a household name worldwide.

Why The Hulk endures

The clearest case of a superhero built as a horror figure, and the Marvel character with the widest reach outside comics readership thanks to the 1978 television series. His green-and-purple palette is one of the most recognised colour pairings in fiction.

What The Hulk looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Green musculature and torn purple trousers; the clenched fist

Purple and green is a jarring pairing that has become inseparable from the character. On apparel, the 'ripped shirt' trompe-l'œil print is a genre unto itself here, and the green fist works as a minimal single-colour graphic.

The 'torn shirt' print — a photo-real ripped-fabric graphic revealing green musculature — is close to a category of its own and sells strongly in kids' sizing. Minimal versions use the green fist or a single silhouette. Purple accents are near-mandatory.
