Who is Iron Man?

Iron Man was designed as a provocation. Stan Lee has described setting out to build a character his readership — young, counter-cultural, increasingly anti-war — ought to dislike on principle: an arms manufacturer, a millionaire, a man whose fortune came from the military-industrial complex, and then daring them to root for him anyway. What makes it work is that the armour is a life-support machine before it is a weapon. Tony Stark builds it because shrapnel is moving toward his heart, and the wound never fully resolves; his real long-running story is about dependency, on the suit, on alcohol, on his own competence. The 1979 'Demon in a Bottle' arc took Marvel's most technologically triumphant character and made him an alcoholic, which was close to unprecedented in mainstream comics. In 2008 the film adaptation converted a mid-tier property into the anchor of the largest film franchise ever assembled.

Why Iron Man endures

The character who converted Marvel from a publisher into a film studio. Narratively, he is also the genre's most sustained treatment of addiction, and the case study for a hero whose politics the story interrogates rather than assumes.

What Iron Man looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The red-and-gold faceplate and the circular chest reactor

The glowing chest circle is the single most useful graphic — a simple luminous disc that works as a small chest print, a glow-in-the-dark treatment or a centred logo. The angular faceplate is the other dominant motif.

The arc reactor is the most-used single graphic and one of the few motifs suited to glow-in-the-dark printing. Faceplate prints work large on black; the red-and-gold palette carries the character even in abstract designs.
