Who is Peter Griffin?

Family Guy exists because of a student film. Seth MacFarlane made a short called The Life of Larry at the Rhode Island School of Design, sent it to Fox, and was given a series at twenty-four — one of the youngest executive producers in American network television at the time. The show's defining formal device is the cutaway gag, in which a line of dialogue triggers an unrelated sketch, and it is genuinely structural rather than decorative: the plot is a delivery mechanism for jokes that have nothing to do with it. Peter is a deliberately extreme version of the sitcom father — the incompetence and appetite of Homer Simpson with none of the underlying warmth — and the series is regularly criticised for that on exactly the grounds it intends. It was cancelled twice and revived on the strength of DVD sales and syndication ratings, which was close to unprecedented.
