Homer Simpson
Homer began as a fairly conventional exasperated sitcom father in the 1987 Tracey Ullman shorts and drifted, over about five seasons, into something far stranger and more useful: a character defined by appetite, incompetence and an almost complete absence of impulse control, who is nonetheless not cruel. That drift was largely driven by the writers discovering he was funnier than Bart, who had been the show's initial breakout.

Who is Homer Simpson?
Homer began as a fairly conventional exasperated sitcom father in the 1987 Tracey Ullman shorts and drifted, over about five seasons, into something far stranger and more useful: a character defined by appetite, incompetence and an almost complete absence of impulse control, who is nonetheless not cruel. That drift was largely driven by the writers discovering he was funnier than Bart, who had been the show's initial breakout. Matt Groening named the family after his own — his father was called Homer — and drew the characters with overbites and overbites alone as the family resemblance. The character's most durable contribution to the language is a grunt of frustration that has been formally added to the Oxford English Dictionary, which is a rare achievement for an animated character.

What Homer Simpson looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Yellow skin, two strands of hair, an M-shaped bald patch, white shirt and blue trousers
The Simpsons yellow is one of the most protected colours in television and is doing most of the identifying work — a yellow head shape reads as this show before any features are drawn. Head-only prints are the dominant treatment.
The yellow is the identifier and needs no other detail. Head-only prints dominate. Works powerfully on black, white and blue garments. Retro 1990s-styled Simpsons apparel is a large and durable adult streetwear category. Not carried on this site's kids' pages.
