Who is The Dude?
The Dude, whose name is Jeffrey Lebowski, is a relaxed Los Angeles slacker who bowls, drinks White Russians and is dragged into a kidnapping plot because a millionaire shares his name. Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed The Big Lebowski in 1998, and Jeff Bridges played the Dude, a character the Coens partly based on the film producer Jeff Dowd. The film did modest business on release but became one of the great cult films of its era, with an annual fan event, Lebowski Fest, from 2002 and a light-hearted philosophy called Dudeism. Because the character is Jeff Bridges, most licensed shirts use the film's lines, the bowling alley, the rug and the drink rather than a portrait.
