The Powerpuff Girls
Craig McCracken made the first version as a student film at CalArts in 1992 under a title Cartoon Network was never going to broadcast, and the show that grew out of it is one of the sharpest-looking things American television animation has produced. The design language is deliberately retro — flat colour, thick black outline, no gradients, no fingers, eyes that take up half the head — drawn from the UPA studio's 1950s style rather than the Disney tradition, and it is why the show still looks modern nearly thirty years on.
