Morty Smith
Rick and Morty began as a crude short made in 2006 that parodied Back to the Future, and the pairing survived the transition to a real series largely intact: a brilliant, destructive grandfather and a fourteen-year-old who is dragged along and does not want to be there. Morty is the show's conscience and its punchline at once — the audience surrogate whose job is to point out that what they are doing is horrifying, and to be overruled.

Who is Morty Smith?
Rick and Morty began as a crude short made in 2006 that parodied Back to the Future, and the pairing survived the transition to a real series largely intact: a brilliant, destructive grandfather and a fourteen-year-old who is dragged along and does not want to be there. Morty is the show's conscience and its punchline at once — the audience surrogate whose job is to point out that what they are doing is horrifying, and to be overruled. Dan Harmon's structural discipline is what stops the premise collapsing into a gag reel; the multiverse conceit means episodes can do genuinely upsetting things and still reset. Justin Roiland voiced both leads until his departure from the production in 2023, after which both roles were recast.

The reluctant half of the most influential adult animation pairing of the 2010s, and the character the show uses to state its own objections.
What Morty Smith looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Yellow shirt, blue trousers, wide anxious eyes and no chin
Flat colour, thick outline, almost no detail — designed to be cheap to animate and consequently very easy to print. Yellow on black is the pairing this show's apparel almost always uses, and it works.
Yellow on black is the house combination for this licence and it prints cleanly. Flat colour, thick outline, no gradients. Adult sizing only in practice.
