Morty is the show's conscience and its punchline at once — the audience surrogate whose job is to point out that what they are doing is horrifying, and to be overruled. Dan Harmon's structural discipline is what stops the premise collapsing into a gag reel; the multiverse conceit means episodes can do genuinely upsetting things and still reset. Justin Roiland voiced both leads until his departure from the production in 2023, after which both roles were recast.
