Who is Strawberry Shortcake?

Strawberry Shortcake is a freckled girl in a strawberry-print bonnet, and she began as a greeting-card illustration. American Greetings commissioned artist Muriel Fahrion to draw her in 1979, and Kenner turned her into a line of dolls in 1980 whose selling point was that they smelled of fruit. Television specials followed, and for a few years in the early 1980s she was one of the biggest licensed characters in American toy stores. The character has been redesigned several times since, and the rights passed from American Greetings to other owners, including WildBrain. Apparel today splits between retro 1980s artwork for adults who had the dolls and current designs for young children.
