Who is The Smurfs?

The Smurfs are small blue villagers in white hats, each named after the one thing that defines them — Brainy, Hefty, Grouchy — and led by Papa Smurf in red. Peyo, the Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, introduced them in 1958 as supporting characters in a Johan and Peewit story in Spirou magazine, and they quickly took over. In the United States they are mainly remembered through Hanna-Barbera's series, which ran on NBC from 1981 to 1989 and made them a Saturday-morning staple. The word smurf itself does grammatical work in their speech, replacing nouns and verbs at will. The group, rather than any single Smurf, is what sells on clothing, with Papa Smurf and Smurfette as the two most requested individuals.
