The Care Bears were invented backwards. American Greetings had set up a division whose entire purpose was to design characters that could be licensed out of the card aisle, and the bears were painted by Elena Kucharik for greeting cards in 1981, sold to Kenner as toys in 1983, and only reached television and cinemas after the toys were already moving.

Who is The Care Bears?
The Care Bears were invented backwards. American Greetings had set up a division whose entire purpose was to design characters that could be licensed out of the card aisle, and the bears were painted by Elena Kucharik for greeting cards in 1981, sold to Kenner as toys in 1983, and only reached television and cinemas after the toys were already moving. It is the reverse of how a studio property works, and it shows in the design: each bear is a flat pastel shape distinguished by one symbol on the stomach, which is a system rather than a cast. That system is why the licence has stayed valuable for four decades — you can add a bear, and the rules for drawing it are already written. The 1985 film outgrossed most of what Disney released that year.
