Eeyore

Eeyore is the reason the Hundred Acre Wood books have lasted with adults. Milne wrote a children's story containing a character who is straightforwardly depressed, who expects nothing, who is not cured by the end of any chapter, and whom the other animals simply continue to include — which is a considerably more useful thing to show a child than cheerfulness would be.

Who is Eeyore?

Eeyore is the reason the Hundred Acre Wood books have lasted with adults. Milne wrote a children's story containing a character who is straightforwardly depressed, who expects nothing, who is not cured by the end of any chapter, and whom the other animals simply continue to include — which is a considerably more useful thing to show a child than cheerfulness would be. The tail is detachable and keeps being lost, which functions as a running joke and as something more than one. Shepard drew him with the head permanently low. He has become, unexpectedly, the strongest adult seller in the range: the melancholy reads as dry humour on a shirt, and dry humour is what adults buy.

The depression is not resolved
No chapter cures him, and the other characters include him regardless
The tail comes off
A running joke through both books, pinned back on repeatedly
Posture does the work
Shepard drew the head permanently low; the design needs no expression
The adult seller of the range
Deadpan reads better on adult apparel than cheerfulness does
Named for the sound
The name is a rendering of a donkey's bray

Why Eeyore endures

A children's character written as plainly melancholy and never fixed, which is why he transfers to adult apparel better than anything else in the range.

What Eeyore looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Grey donkey, lowered head, pink bow on a detachable tail

Grey with a single pink accent, and a posture that carries the entire joke without a caption. The silhouette alone works, which is rare — most of this cast needs colour to be identified.

The strongest adult garment in the Hundred Acre Wood catalogue. Grey on charcoal, black or heather; the pink tail bow is the only colour needed. Silhouette-only prints work.
