Who is Arthur Read?
Arthur Read is an eight-year-old aardvark in round glasses who deals with school, siblings and friends in the town of Elwood City. Marc Brown introduced him in the 1976 picture book Arthur's Nose, and the books grew into a long series. PBS's animated Arthur ran from 1996 to 2022, and is often described as the longest-running children's animated series in the United States. Its theme song, Believe in Yourself, was performed by Ziggy Marley. For a generation of adults, Arthur is also a meme: a 2016 screenshot of his clenched fist spread widely online, and it is now one of the most common Arthur shirt designs. His younger sister D.W. became almost as well known as he is, and his friends Buster and Francine anchor many episodes. The final episode, in 2022, jumped twenty years ahead to show the characters as adults.
