Miffy
Dick Bruna invented Miffy in 1955 to entertain his one-year-old son during a rainy holiday, and spent the next sixty years refining her downward. The design is the most disciplined in this catalogue: thick uniform black lines, a small fixed palette of flat primaries plus green, no shading, no perspective, and a face consisting of two dots and a small cross for a mouth.

Who is Miffy?
Dick Bruna invented Miffy in 1955 to entertain his one-year-old son during a rainy holiday, and spent the next sixty years refining her downward. The design is the most disciplined in this catalogue: thick uniform black lines, a small fixed palette of flat primaries plus green, no shading, no perspective, and a face consisting of two dots and a small cross for a mouth. Bruna drew the lines by hand with a brush and would redraw a single page dozens of times to get the weight right. Because the mouth is a cross rather than a curve it reads as neither happy nor sad, and small children project onto it. Her legal history is also notable: Bruna's company pursued Sanrio for years over a character it considered too close, and the dispute was settled in 2011 with both parties agreeing to donate to Japanese earthquake relief instead of continuing.

Why Miffy endures
One of the most rigorously minimal character designs ever made, and a defining influence on Dutch graphic modernism and on the broader minimal-character tradition that includes much of Japanese kawaii design.

The most rigorously minimal design here — a handful of lines and flat primaries with no shading whatsoever. It is essentially designed for reproduction, and prints perfectly at any scale on any garment. The Dutch modernist palette is distinctive against the pastel norm of this category.
