Who is Curious George?

The manuscript survived the fall of France on a bicycle. Hans and Margret Rey were German Jews living in Paris in June 1940; with the German army approaching and no transport available, Hans built bicycles from spare parts and they left the city hours before it fell, carrying very little — including the drawings for a book about a curious monkey. They reached Lisbon, then Brazil, then New York, where it was published in 1941. Margret's contribution was for years under-credited and the books are now properly attributed to both. The character himself is an engine of a very specific kind: George is not naughty, he is curious, and the distinction is maintained rigorously across the series. He causes chaos by investigating things, is never punished for it, and something useful usually results — which is a notably permissive attitude for children's books of that period.

Why Curious George endures

One of the most enduring characters in American children's literature, whose manuscript survived the German occupation of Paris, and an unusually permissive treatment of childhood curiosity for its era.

What Curious George looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: A small brown monkey, usually beside the Man in the Yellow Hat

The yellow hat is the strongest single graphic in the property and identifies it with no character present at all — a rare case of a supporting character's prop becoming the mark. Warm yellows and browns.
