Who is GIR?
GIR is a small robot assigned to help the alien Zim conquer Earth, and he is completely unsuited to the job. In Jhonen Vasquez's Invader Zim, which ran on Nickelodeon from 2001 to 2002, GIR is a defective SIR unit — Standard-issue Information Retrieval — whose head was apparently filled with scrap. When disguised, he wears a green dog suit with the zip visible, and he spends most episodes eating tacos and waffles, singing a song about doom, or shrieking with delight. His red eyes turn blue when he is behaving normally. Rosearik Rikki Simons voiced him. The series was cancelled before its final episodes were finished, but it built a lasting cult audience, and a film, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, was released on Netflix in 2019. In the years between, GIR became a staple of alternative teen fashion, sold on T-shirts, pins and backpacks, often by people who knew him better than the show. His combination of cute proportions and chaotic personality is exactly what made him easy to put on merchandise.
