Who is Mr. Potato Head?

Mr. Potato Head began as a set of plastic face parts to push into a real potato. George Lerner invented the toy and Hasbro released it in 1952, and it is widely described as the first toy advertised on American television. A plastic potato body replaced the vegetable in 1964. Most people under forty know the character from Toy Story in 1995, where Pixar cast him as a sarcastic, grumbling toy voiced by Don Rickles, whose insult-comedy delivery suited him exactly. After Rickles died in 2017, Toy Story 4 built the character's lines from his existing recordings. Hasbro renamed the toy brand Potato Head in 2021 while keeping the Mr. Potato Head character. Shirts use both the toy-box and the Toy Story versions.
