Who is The Minions?
The Minions are the most commercially efficient character design of the last twenty years, and almost every decision behind them is a production economy that turned out to be a creative asset. They are capsules — a shape with no neck, no complex rigging and minimal facial articulation — so they are cheap to animate in large numbers. They speak a constructed nonsense built from French, Spanish, Italian, English and food words, which means they need no dubbing and land identically in every market on release day. Pierre Coffin, one of the directors, voices nearly all of them himself. The result was a supporting cast that overwhelmed the film they were in: within five years they had their own prequel, and the franchise now sits among the highest-grossing animated properties ever made.
