Illumination is the most efficient operation in feature animation and it is not close. Chris Meledandri built the studio around producing films for roughly half what competitors spend — using a Paris-based studio, tighter production schedules and a deliberate avoidance of the technical arms race over fur, water and cloth simulation. The result is a company whose films are rarely the year's most admired and frequently the year's most profitable. The Minions are the clearest expression of the method: simple capsule shapes, almost no facial rigging complexity, no dialogue requiring translation, and therefore enormously cheap to animate and to release in every market simultaneously.
The studio deliberately avoids the technical arms race over fur and water simulation, which is a large part of why its films cost so much less to make.
