Who is Olaf?
Olaf is the joke that turned out to be load-bearing. Frozen spent years in development as a much darker film, and the version that finally worked found its footing partly by putting a comic snowman at the centre of the sibling relationship — he is the thing the two sisters built together as children, so every appearance is a reminder of what they lost. Josh Gad recorded much of the part improvising, and the directors kept a great deal of it. The design is a deliberate assembly of parts that should not hold together: three uneven snowballs, twig arms that fall off, a carrot nose that keeps getting eaten, and a single tooth. That instability is the animation gag and it is also, incidentally, what makes him such a good print, because there is no correct arrangement to get wrong.

The carrot is the whole colour story — everything else is white and black, so a single orange triangle carries the character. That makes him unusually cheap to print and immediately legible on any dark fabric.
