Casper
Casper is a children's character with a premise nobody involved has ever wanted to examine closely: he is a dead child. The stories never say so directly — the 1995 film is the only version that addresses it, and does so carefully — but the whole appeal rests on the tension between what a ghost is and how gently this one behaves.

Who is Casper?
Casper is a children's character with a premise nobody involved has ever wanted to examine closely: he is a dead child. The stories never say so directly — the 1995 film is the only version that addresses it, and does so carefully — but the whole appeal rests on the tension between what a ghost is and how gently this one behaves. He wants friends and is repeatedly fled from, which is the entire plot of most of his shorts. Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo devised him around 1939 as a children's book that went unpublished, and Famous Studios animated him in 1945 before Harvey Comics acquired and expanded him. For Halloween merchandising aimed at very young children he is close to unbeatable, because he supplies the season's imagery with none of its menace.

Why Casper endures
The most enduring attempt to make a ghost safe for very small children, and the anchor of Harvey Comics' entire strategy of supernatural characters with the menace removed.
What Casper looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: A small rounded white ghost with a wide friendly face
About as simple as a design can be — a white rounded shape with two eyes and a smile, which means it needs a coloured garment to exist at all. Works exceptionally well on black, orange and purple, and is one of the few designs improved by glow-in-the-dark ink.
