Tiana
The Princess and the Frog was the studio's return to hand-drawn animation after Home on the Range had apparently ended it, and it is the only one of the recent princess films made that way. Setting it in 1920s New Orleans gave the artists something computer animation had made unfashionable — wrought iron, painted signage, streetcars, a Randy Newman score played by a live jazz band — and the film is worth watching for the backgrounds alone.

Who is Tiana?
The Princess and the Frog was the studio's return to hand-drawn animation after Home on the Range had apparently ended it, and it is the only one of the recent princess films made that way. Setting it in 1920s New Orleans gave the artists something computer animation had made unfashionable — wrought iron, painted signage, streetcars, a Randy Newman score played by a live jazz band — and the film is worth watching for the backgrounds alone. Tiana is the first Black princess in the studio's line, and the character's defining trait is work: she holds two jobs and wants a restaurant, which is a materially different want from the ones the earlier films gave their heroines. Anika Noni Rose voices her. She also spends most of the running time as a frog, which is not something the merchandising has ever known what to do with.

What Tiana looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Green and gold gown, water lily, New Orleans ironwork
Green and gold is the most distinctive princess palette in the range, and the water lily works as a standalone botanical print. Art-deco and ironwork treatments suit adult sizing far better than a character portrait does.
Green and gold is unmistakable in a rack of princess tees. Water lily and art-deco treatments carry adult sizing; portraits belong in youth and toddler. Works well on black, which most of the range does not.
