Who is Waldo?

Martin Handford was an illustrator with a habit of drawing enormous crowds, and his publisher's contribution was to ask whether there might be something in them worth finding. That is the entire invention, and it has sold in the tens of millions across more than thirty languages. Each spread is drawn by hand and reportedly takes around eight weeks, packed with small self-contained jokes that reward a reader who has already located the figure and has nothing left to do but look. The character's name changes almost everywhere — Wally in Britain, Waldo in the United States, Charlie in France, Walter in Germany — because a pun does not survive a border but a costume does. And the costume is the point: red and white horizontal stripes, a bobble hat, round glasses, a walking stick.

Why Waldo endures

A character whose identity is entirely an outfit, which is why he transfers onto clothing more directly than almost any licensed figure.

What Waldo looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Red and white horizontal stripes, bobble hat, round glasses

One of very few characters that is genuinely a garment. The stripe pattern alone identifies him without a figure printed on it at all, which is why this licence sells as much as all-over striped apparel as it does as a graphic tee.

Sells in two distinct forms — a graphic print of the figure, and all-over red-and-white striped garments with no figure at all. The striped version is the group-costume seller and runs from toddler through adult 3XL in the same design.
