Who is Greg Heffley?
Jeff Kinney worked on Diary of a Wimpy Kid for six years before a publisher took it, and in the meantime put it up free on Funbrain, the children's site where he had a day job building games. It was read tens of millions of times there. He had written it for adults looking back at middle school, and the discovery that children were the audience came from the traffic rather than the plan. The format is what did it: a hand-lettered journal with cartoons on every page, which looks like a comic to a child who has decided books are not for them and is finishable in an afternoon. Greg himself is drawn about as simply as a person can be and still be a person — a hollow oval, two dots, a nose, three hairs — and the series has now passed 275 million copies in print.
