Who is Lisa Simpson?
Lisa Simpson is the conscience of The Simpsons, and for more than thirty years she has been the character the show uses when it wants to be sincere. Matt Groening named her after one of his sisters when he created the family for short segments on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. Yeardley Smith voices her; she originally auditioned for Bart, but her voice was judged to sound too much like a girl's, and she won an Emmy for the role in 1992. Lisa plays the baritone saxophone, is the smartest person in her family by some distance, and became a vegetarian in the 1995 episode Lisa the Vegetarian, in which Paul and Linda McCartney appeared on condition that she remain one — and she has. Her design is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in animation: a star of spiky hair, a pearl necklace and a red dress. Shirts tend to use her quieter moments and her saxophone.
